There are some people who love motorhomes who have converted the likes of a van into a motorhome rather than purchase a purpose built motorhome. This could be for a number of reasons such as cost and/or the appeal of enjoying completing the conversion work. If you are considering such a renovation then you might like to visit the Gov.uk website and read the updated guidance notes published by the DVLA (Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency) on the 20th October 2026.

There are a number of things that say the conversion of a van into a motorhome must have such as at least two or more windows must be on one side of the bodywork in addition to any windows in the existing passenger or driver’s doors so that there is an acceptable level of light getting into the living area of the leisure vehicle. Furthermore, there must be either a pop-top roof that elevates or a high top roof. Also, in addition to the driver’s and passenger doors, there must be another door providing access to the living area of the motorhome. It should be noted that this door window is treated as a window that is considered to be separate for the main body of the vehicle.

It is a requirement that photos and a conversion checklist are made available to the DVLA when submitting the conversion application. Photos will need to be taken of both the outside of the motorhome conversion and also internal photos. It will also be necessary to provide a photo of either the chassis number on the vehicle or the VIN (vehicle identification number).

There may be occasions when the DVLA will wish to inspect the vehicle to consider a conversion request.

As we said earlier, a lot more information can be found on the above website so if you are considering such a project do spend some time studying the requirements.
