According to the Confused.com Car Insurance Price Index that was last published in June 2026 the average premium for fully comprehensive car insurance rose by £8 per annum to £719 per annum. Yes, it is only a small increase but it is the first time average car insurance premiums have gone up since the end of 2023 – in the region of 2 and 1/2 years ago. On a positive note, average premiums fell by £38 per annum in the 12 months to the end of May 2026.

Needless to say, if you are 18 years of age then, on average, you can expect to pay more to insure your car than a 60 year old motorist who has many years experience driving a car. As an example, a driver aged between 17 to 20 pays an average of 31,813 per annum, a driver aged between 40 to 49 is charged an average of £699 per annum and a motorist aged between 60 to 69 pays an average of £459 per annum.

If you live in the South West of the UK then average premiums are at the lowest at £504 per annum. If you live in the North of England then premiums average £606 per annum. Live in East Midlands region then expect to pay an average of £709 per annum. However if you reside in Inner London then, on average, you will pay more than in any other region of the UK with premiums averaging £1,088 per annum. As you can see, premiums are more than 100% more between the cheapest and most expensive regions.
