If you own a motorhome or indeed any other type of motor vehicle such as, for instance, a car, lorry, van or motorbike you may sometimes wander just how much is paid out by motor insurers to meet claims for such things as damage to vehicles in road traffic accidents or if a vehicle has been stolen.

Well, you may find it interesting to hear that, according to the ABI (Association of British Insurers), a record £3.2 billion was paid out by motor insurance companies here in the UK in the second quarter of 2026 to meet claims. Some of you may find it surprising the figure is so high but for others it may not come as a surprise.

The amount paid out Q2 of 2026 was 5% more than in the previous quarter and 7% more than in the same quarter of 2025. That sounds like quite an increase.

In the second quarter of 2026, the average amount paid out to meet motor insurance claims was £4,900. That was a rise of 4% when compared with the first quarter of 2026.

The average amount paid out for windscreen repairs was £283 with this being a rise of 7% when compared with the previous quarter. That does seem a hefty increase in the space of 3 months.

There are no doubt a few reasons why claims payouts by motor insurance companies have gone up but one of those may be due to repairing newer cars as these often have quite complex equipment and parts. For instance, the braking system on a new car may be somewhat different to a 30 year old vehicle. The sat nav on the newer model of car may be more involved than one in a car that is 15 years of age. More newer vehicles are fitted these days with parking sensors and reversing cameras. The lighting systems are quite involved nowadays on many newer vehicles. Let us not forget that the cost of many parts has probably gone up due to inflation.
