Now would appear to be an opportune time to talk about fire safety in respect of your motorhome considering the fire hazard caused by the extreme temperatures we have been seeing in recent weeks here in the UK and other parts of the world.

We mention just a few of the things you should consider when it comes to reducing the possibility of causing a fire in and around your motorhome.

For instance, if you are parking your motorhome for the night in close proximity to other leisure vehicles then you should make sure that there is a minimum of 6 meters between your motorhome and say a caravan, campervan or other motorhome. This is with a view to hopefully reducing the spread of fire between two or more vehicles.

At the time of writing you are not allowed to use barbeques outside in view of the fire hazard they cause but should there come a time when such things are permitted you really should use them with extreme care. You might like to keep a bucket of water at hand to use in case of need. Don’t leave the embers to burn out after you have finished cooking on a barbeque – make sure that it is completely out. It only takes the likes of a spark to land on parched grass to cause a fire that could potentially spread rapidly.

Make sure that things like bedding and towels are not left near heaters or the cooker as they could catch fire and destroy your motorhome and not forgetting the risk to human life.

If you or anyone else in the motorhome is a smoker make sure that matches are extinguished after use and don’t discard cigarette buts anywhere near or on things that could catch alight.

Don’t leave things like deodorant spray or hair spray close to heating incase the pressurized container explodes causing a fire.

Make sure that you have a suitable smoke alarm or two in your motorhome to warn you in the event of a possible fire that should give you more time if necessary to vacate the motorhome.

Make sure that the likes of beds and upholstery are made using flame-retardant foam to reduce the possibility of a fire.

Make sure you have a range of fire extinguishers in your motorhome to use if required.

Remember, in the event of a fire, the priority should be to make sure that everybody is in a safe place before attempting to deal with the fire but only if it is safe to do so. Do not delay in calling the fire brigade.

We trust that you find the above of benefit and that you are never faced with encountering a fire either in or close to your motorhome.
