Hopefully, when you use your motorhome to take a much needed weekend break or a week or two on holiday, the weather will be kind to you providing you with some delightful sunshine. However, in particular if you are travelling in the UK, it is quite possible that you may encounter some rain. So, what should you consider when driving in such conditions?
This list is not exhaustive but you should check your motorhome to make sure that your brakes meet the required standards as it will take you longer to come to a halt after putting on your brakes in wet road conditions. Also make sure that your tyres are fit for purpose with a legal tread depth and no visible signs of wearing badly such as splits and perhaps a nail in one of the tyres.
Make sure that the windscreen wipers – both front and rear are operating effectively. Check that you have a full reservoir of screen wash so that you can clean the front and rear windows whilst driving along removing mud etc from the glass so that your vision is not impaired.
Keep your distance from the vehicle in front as it will take you longer to come to a halt should you need to brake in rainy conditions. Also drive your motorhome at a lower speed when the road surface is wet as the quicker you travel the longer it will take your motorhome to come to a halt.
You might like to consider driving with your headlights on when it is raining as this will ensure that you are more likely to be seen by other vehicles and people. If the rain is very heavy then consider putting your fog lights on.
To avoid the windows in your motorhome getting misty consider putting the heater on and also make sure your air conditioning is operating.
When coming up behind another vehicle that has had to slow down and come to a halt say at a set of traffic lights start to slow down a greater distance away from the vehicle in wet weather.
Be careful when driving on a campsite especially if you are on the grass as the surface could be particularly slippery in wet conditions and the last thing you want to do is slide into the side of another motorhome or a tent with the possibility of harming people on the campsite.
We hope that the above has given you food for thought when driving your motorhome in wet weather.
