It goes without saying but we will say it anyway – a motorhome is a larger vehicle to drive around in than a car. Therefore, if you are about to set out on your first trip in your new motorhome we hope that the following tips will prove to be beneficial.
You might like to attend a course in driving a motorhome such as those on offer at one or more shows in the UK. You would have the support of an experienced motorhome owner who would provide you with a basis to work from.
It is worth remembering that a motorhome is not only longer, higher and wider than a car but it is also going to be heavier and these things have a bearing upon how you manoeuvre the leisure vehicle as well as brake and steer it.
In view of its height make sure that you are going to be able to get underneath bridges and to be conscious of low hanging branches by the side of the road. Its width needs to be borne closely in mind especially on very narrow roads.
Prior to setting off on holiday in your new motorhome you might like to consider taking it out on a major A road to help get used to it. That should help you get used to turning and steering the motorhome.
You might like to practice parking and reversing the vehicle say on a trading estate after everyone has gone home and you have an empty car park to practice in. You will not have to be concerned about becoming embarrassed by people watching you make the occasional mistake until you have got the hang of things. You will need to make full use of your wing and rear view mirrors.
In view of the weight of a motorhome be aware that it will take longer to come to a halt should you need to brake. So, make sure that you keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front.
Be aware that as a motorhome is higher than a car you may notice crosswinds more so drive with care and keep well within the speed limit.
Obviously, before setting off, you will need to make sure that your brakes are in working order as well as your lights and the tyres have the correct pressure. Have you topped up your brake fluid, oil and engine coolant?
Try to plan out your route as best you can and ensure that you take frequent breaks and do not drive if you are tired. Also, be aware of the weather as this could affect the road conditions such as rain, ice or snow.
We hope that you enjoy your first holiday in your new motorhome.
