The clocks have changed and it is getting colder as winter starts to set in. As mentioned in our last post, for many motorhome owners it is the time of year to stop using their leisure vehicles until the spring. However, for some motorhome enthusiasts, they take breaks in those vehicles throughout the year no matter what the weather is like.
If you are one of those people then you will no doubt make sure that your motorhome is going to be fit for purpose in the inclement weather such as snow, ice, wind and rain. Of course, it is to be hoped that you do not encounter such weather on your holiday and instead enjoy some lovely sunshine and reasonably warm temperatures.
Do bear in mind that not all campsites open throughout the year. So, when planning a weekend break make sure that you do your research and check that the campsite(s) you would like to spend the night at are going to be open and have good bathroom facilities and ideally an electric hook-ups.
Make sure that your motorhome has been serviced to reduce the possibility of breaking down. If you are unfortunate that happens make sure you have breakdown recovery cover in place. Check that such things as your tyres and brakes are in good working order and that the tread on the tyres is well above the legal limit. Also make sure that the tyre pressure is correct. Check that you have enough antifreeze and it is of the right mixture to withstand cold temperatures. Make sure that the batteries are fully charged and consider taking a charger with you.
When driving your motorhome make sure that you keep a safe distance away from the vehicle in front as in snow and ice it takes longer to stop.
Before setting out make sure that your heating in the motorhome is in good working order as you would not want to be sitting in your motorhome in sub-zero temperatures at say 11 o’clock in the evening with ice on the windows.
Don’t forget to have good quality bedding such as sleeping bags and quilts so that you can get under the covers and keep warm whilst you enjoy a good night’s sleep.
Stock up with plenty of food incase you do get caught up in deep snow and have to park up for a bit longer than expected. Make sure you have plenty of fresh water on your motorhome and that it is insulated.
We hope that the above is of benefit especially if you are venturing off for your first winter’s break in your motorhome. Enjoy your few days away.
