Whilst there are going to be quite a number of motorhome owners who go away in their leisure vehicles throughout the year to enjoy a well-earned break in the UK there will probably be more people who go away in the spring, summer and autumn months. So, if you are one of the latter, what should you do with your motorhome during the winter?
Well, one of the first things to consider is where to store your motorhome. In an ideal world, it would be preferable if you were able to garage your motorhome to keep it away from inclement weather that we tend to encounter in the wintertime. However, that is unlikely to be an option open to most people whether that is due to there being nowhere within reasonable travelling distance or cost considerations. Realistically, it is possibly going to be a choice between taking it to an outdoor storage facility or parking it up on your drive or on the street outside your home.
An advantage of storing it somewhere away from your home is that it is hopefully going to be in a secure compound that has some form or forms of security measures in place such as security cameras and/or a 24 hour security guard. You should consider using the likes of a wheel clamp and steering lock.
You could consider covering your motorhome that would protect it from some of the harsh winter conditions such as wind and rain. Purchase a breathable cover.
Make sure that your motorhome is thoroughly cleaned out to reduce the possibility of mould accumulating. Make sure that all items of food are removed from the motorhome including the fridge and leave the fridge door slightly open and turned off. Ensure that all work surfaces are wiped clean. Remove bedding and wash and dry it ready for spring.
If you are going to leave your gas cylinder in your motorhome, make sure that the valves are turned off to avoid the escape of gas.
You should make sure that the handbrake is off and use wheel chocks and that the vehicle is in gear.
All the taps should be opened and all water is drained. The toilet cassette should be empty and thoroughly cleaned.
Make sure that the batteries are charged and it would be a good idea to drive the vehicle on occasions.
If safe to do so, consider slightly opening one of the windows on your motorhome to increase ventilation.
If you are not going to be driving your motorhome at all in the winter then you could consider declaring your vehicle SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) to save your self some money.
The above is not an exhaustive list but we hope that it helps in keeping your motorhome in good condition in the winter months.
