You may be interested to read that the number of motorists having penalty points added to their driving licenses due to their vehicles being considered to be unroadworthy increased by in excess of 50% between 2023 and 2024 according to research carried out by a division of the RAC. More information can be found on their website but we highlight some of the figures below.
For instance, in 2023 there were 8,614 drivers having their driving licenses endorsed for the above. In 2024 that figure had risen to 13,109. That is a rise of 4,495 – a 52% jump that you will no doubt agree is a very big increase and is somewhat concerning.
The region of the UK with the biggest rise in percentage terms was the East Midlands that saw such endorsements on driving licenses go up from 374 in 2023 to 621 in 2024 – a rise of 326 that equates to an 87% jump. In 2nd place was West Scotland with endorsements rising from 423 in 203 to 621 in 2024 – an increase of 198 but in percentage terms a jump of 47%.
If you then look at the region where motorists had the biggest number of endorsements last year it is Greater London with 1,765. In 2nd place is Yorkshire and Humber with 1,373 and in 3rd place South East England with 1,167.
Of the 13.109 motorists caught with unroadworthy vehicles in 2024, 8,945 were because their vehicles had tyres that were considered to be defective in some way. This was a rise of 6,196 equating to a jump of 44% compared to 2023. The number of motorists receiving penalty points on their driving licenses for brakes that were defective increase from 181 in 2023 to 1,190 in 2024.
We are sure that you will agree these figures are worrying. It is important that vehicles are properly maintained and it is the responsibility of the owner to make sure that their vehicles are roadworthy. Having a regular service should assist in this respect but periodic checks of things like tyres and brakes should also form part of a vehicle’s owners due diligence.
