An awful lot of people who own motorhomes will probably also own a family hatchback car. If that is the case, you may find it of interest to read that the amount paid out to meet car insurance claims in the first quarter of this year reached a record level according to figures published by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) that has been keeping such records since 2013.

You may be surprised to hear that in Q1 of 2025 £3.2 billion was paid out by car insurers of which £2.1 billion related to repair costs. Some of those repair costs have been increasing such as the cost of spare parts required by body repair shops and the wages paid to their staff.

It is also worth noting that some of the car parts have become more sophisticated and hence more costly so that will be a factor in why the amount paid out by car insurance companies to meet claims have gone up.

Obviously, if claim payouts go up then, potentially, car insurance premiums could also rise. Presumably, the same can be said of motorhome insurance premiums.

Interestingly, the average amount paid out by car insurance companies to meet the theft of cars and items stolen from within cars averaged £11,300 in the first quarter of 2025.

Is there anything that can be done by motorists to potentially contain or reduce motor insurance premiums in relation to claim payouts? Well, you could make sure that you drive as carefully as possible on the roads ensuring that you always keep within the speed limit. Doing this may help reduce the possibility of you being involved in a road traffic accident.

You could also be careful where you park your car overnight. If you cannot put it in the garage can you park it on your drive or failing that on the street outside your home under a streetlight? This may help reduce the possibility of your car being stolen or have something stolen from within it.
